This is the time of year kids are antsy because school is almost out. While you may be gearing up for vacations or summer camps, I want to encourage you to think about how to add some structure to your child’s day. It can be difficult to include structure in the summer months with school out, but this will be important for your child. Structure provides a sense of security and safety for your kiddo. They likely push back and try to fight against it, but ultimately consistency helps them stay regulated and connected to you.
This can look different for every family. It depends on what your kids need! Most kids do not function well without 9-12 hours of sleep (depending on their age) so going to bed and waking up around the same time can be helpful. Giving them a limit on screen time and staying firm with it encourages creative and outdoor play and decreases anger outbursts. Lastly, giving them an idea of what the next day looks like or giving choices (eg. we can go to the park tomorrow afternoon or watch a movie at home) can help them use free time well.
Think about your kid and how they thrive, then ask yourself what one part of their life you keep consistent this summer. You might be surprised how they transition back to school easily and keep themselves entertained. Wishing you a summer full of sweet memories!
